Book look: WWI, JFK and L.A.

Guido Knopp has written a vast number of historical books. Many, if not 1most of them, analyse the political developments during World War Two. His latest release focuses on the First World War which is here seen as a part of the Thirty Years’ War of the 20th century. A considerably long peaceful period ended in 1914 by the devastating conflict. Knopp decided to create chapters around 74 carefully chosen wartime photographs. He explains when they were taken and what they show. Thanks to the precise research of the former Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reporter and his team, a lot of information about war-era events and actions taking place when the book’s photos were taken, can now be regarded as wrong. The impressive images of “Der Erste Weltkrieg. Die Bilanz in Bildern” show soldiers, monarchs and poor children.

Fifty years after the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, many rumours still dominate people’s perception. Kennedy carried the hopes of the Western World, but also dragged the United States deep into the Vietnam War. Kennedy – whose rivals acknowledged his brilliant rhetoric – appealed on Americans to turn over a new leaf together. At the same time, he did everything to keep his affairs and fragile health a secret. Ronald D. Gerste – a German historian and journalist based in Washington, D.C. – analysed Kennedy’s personality and his policies in 100 chapters. He investigated the environment in which the ambitious Democrat grew up. “JFK. 100 Fragen – 100 Antworten” also contains facts about the charismatic politician’s decisions regarding the USA’s relation with Cuba and the Soviet Union. Overall, Gerste’s book helps to comprehend why the 1,000 days of Kennedy’s presidency are an important chapter in world politics.
