Book look: Australia & post-war Austria

Piper’s family of “Gebrauchsanweisung” is growing as Joscha Remus presents Australia. The Berlin-based travel writer – who loves visiting Australia during the European winter – portrays the different cities and regions of the fascinating country. His texts are more than travel reports. Structured into 30 chapters, Remus writes about people, culture and animals. His book offers a wider view on Australia than a 45-minute documentary could ever offer. Remus is a true expert on the country and its inhabitants. He examines prejudices and clichés – from climate topics to the story of the aborigines and culinary subjects. His 225-page book follows “Gebrauchsanweisung” guides by Jagoda Marinic (Croatia), Henning Klüver (Milan) and Roman Schatz (Finland). Ronald Reng – who wrote several football-themed bestseller books – portrayed London a few years ago while Thomas Küng wrote a contributed “Gebrauchsanweisung für die Schweiz”.

There could not have been a more suitable cover photograph: two kids playing at Belvedere gardens – in the lavish park in front of the castle where the Austrian State Treaty was signed and presented to a cheering crowd. This impressive black and white photo was chosen as cover shot for a new book documenting the difficult decades after World War Two in Austria. “Von der Befreiung zur Freiheit” features photographs taken by Erich Lessing as well as in interview with the renowned photographer conducted by Michael Gehler. Lessing’s images offer a view on politics behind the scenes and present the life of Vienna’s high society – from the pompous State Opera Ball to rehearsals with conductor Herbert von Karajan. However, the 92-year-old did not neglect the working class either. His photo series portray pub musicians and people at their modest homes. On more than 380 pages, this book conveys a realistic image of a country struggling to get back on track. Lessing’s focus on Vienna and the city’s inhabitants does not tarnish his achievements and the impact of this remarkable publication.

Dramatic derby expected

It’s derby time again and Rapid appear to be back on track.

The Green-Whites had to endure some bitter defeats in the Bundesliga recently while city rivals FK Austria marched on. Red Bull Salzburg also managed to get closer to the top of the league. Last Sunday, the “Bulls” beat Admira 8-0.

Rapid lost against struggling Wolfsberger AC, the team managed by ex-Rapid ace Dietmar Kühbauer. Now Rapid face FK Austria. The match takes place at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium on Sunday (kickoff: 4.30pm).

Last night, the team coached by Zoran Barisic sent out a warning signal by beating FC Viktoria Plzeň 3-2 in the Europa League group stage. This victory could be crucial as it takes the team closer to the knockout stage.

Europa League action continues in 2016. Now the capital is getting ready for the legendary city derby. Rapid must not underestimate FK Austria who reshaped their squad by adding top players like national team keeper Robert Almer and Nigerian winger Olarenwaju Kayode.

Tickets for the match are still available. Visit http://www.skrapid.at for further information.

Running, flying & Rolls-Royce

Events such as the 3-Länder-Marathon will strengthen the Lake Constance region’s reputation as a wonderful all-season holiday destination.

Located where Germany, Switzerland and Austria share a border, the Bodensee (Lake Constance) offers excellent opportunities to do sports, especially in spring and summer. However, autumn is also an important period for the local tourism industry. The 3-Länder-Marathon – this year’s edition took place on 4th of October – has developed into one of the most popular long-distance running competitions in the region.

Around 5,000 runners participated in the run despite cold temperatures, strong wind and heavy rain in the morning. The sky had cleared and temperatures had risen when the professional and leisure-time athletes crossed the finish line at the Casino Stadium in Bregenz. The Marathon traditionally starts at Lindau in Germany. The track leads through along the Lake Constance shore through Bregenz to Switzerland before those who complete the full distance return to the provincial capital of Vorarlberg.

The wonderful track through all three countries is one of the Marathon’s assets. Furthermore, the event is precisely organised as friendly volunteers provide information wherever it is needed. The special Marathon sports fair at the Festspielhaus Bregenz is a great place to meet runners from all over the world while athletes also appreciate the opportunity to use public transport for free at the weekend the Marathon takes place. If you are interested in next year’s 3-Länder-Marathon, visit the organisers’ official homepage: http://www.sparkasse-3-laender-marathon.at

Vorarlberg is not only popular because of its sports opportunities – from skiing in the beautiful Arlberg region to sailing and cycling when temperatures rise. The province also features several interesting cultural institutions, including a museum focusing on one of the most exclusive cars in the world. The Rolls-Royce-Museum is situated in Gütle just outside Dornbirn, an economic hotspot of the Bodensee area. On three floors, the old building features around 100 original vehicles from all eras as well as spare parts, posters, paintings and souvenirs. Especially the 1920s and 1930s models are impressive. For information regarding opening times, go to http://www.rolls-royce-museum.at.

Aviation enthusiasts will travel to Friedrichshafen, a German city not far from the country’s border with Austria. The city does not just feature a picturesque lakeside boulevard for pedestrians. It also has its own airport. Thousands of tourists go there each year to visit the Dornier Museum (www.dorniermuseum.de). Located in a hangar, fans of flying find detail information about the engineer’s extraordinary achievements as well as several planes, photographs, videos and equipment. The Dornier Museum is certainly a good opportunity to spend an afternoon for young and old as it offers exciting experiences for everyone.

Publishing house Dumont produced a reliable and comprehensive guide for the Lake Constance region. It features many photographs of attractions in Switzerland, Austria and Germany as well as important phone numbers and links.
